Charlie Brown Tribute
I really couldn't come up with a better name for this. Anyways, we had to do a project where we analyze a master's work and create our own piece that's the opposite in some way to said master's work. I picked Charles Shulz, as he set an entirely new standard of comic making with his Peanuts series.

The scene being depicted is a reference to the special, Snoopy Come Home. There was a scene where Lucy and Snoopy were boxing with each other, and I thought I could make a really dynamic and interesting piece with the idea. So, I started with that scene in mind. Then I figured I had to add Charlie Brown and Linus in there somewhere, so I decided to have them watching the match with noticeable concern.

The things I found Shulz to be extremely effective in were his use of line and the characters' over all expressions. I kept the expressions tied to line, and made just about everything else color-based and lineless (except for the background to draw a little contrast in the environment and make the characters pop, but even so, I kept the line minimal and focused on color). The characters were rendered in a psuedo-3D style, as Peanuts (and most other comics, really) are usually viewed in 2D. But, to keep the over all feeling of the piece tied to those 2D roots, I used some gradients and color blending to give the illusion of 3D but the feeling of 2D.
